The Joys of Starting a Side Hustle

If you’re reading this then you’ve probably dabbled with the idea of starting a little somethin’ somethin’ on the side. Perhaps you have a great idea for a business, maybe you love the thought of doing something for yourself or you’re simply tired of your 9 to 5 (and your boss!). Whatever your motivation, a side hustle can be a great way to make a little extra cash and do something that is going to challenge you and bring in a lot of personal rewards.
Since starting mani-cure in January 2018, we've learnt a lot about the joys of having a side business, below are a few of our favourite things about starting and running our side hustle.

There’s no better way to learn than by doing. By setting up a side hustle, you have to wear a lot of different hats and understand everything from accounting through to social media and marketing. We’re lucky to live in an age where there are so many resources on the internet for you to get up to speed on just about anything. Best of all, you’ll be motivated to up-skill to help drive your business and you’ll feel a great sense of achievement by doing it. These little extra nuggets of knowledge are also translatable into skills you can use in your regular day job!

The power is in your hands to make your own decisions based on what YOU decide is right for your business. If that’s not empowering, then I don’t know what is! Sure, you won’t get it right all the time, but the important thing is that your decisions are based on the values, ideals, and brand that you have built. Unlike your typical 9 to 5 day job, the more you put into your business, the more you personally stand to gain.

You will be soooo excited in that moment when you land your first customer or sale (there may or may not be high pitched squealing involved). So crack open the champagne and indulge in this moment! It’s the first indicator that you’ve done something right and people are interested in what you are offering. Once you've landed that first bite, it’s a lot easier to get the ball rolling on your business.

Having an additional income stream can really make a financial difference and allow you to reach your financial goals. It might start small at first, but gradually you’ll build up a nice little sum of money that you can use towards a holiday, house deposit or a year’s worth of smashed avo.

You’ll discover a new found passion that you never knew you had. Rather than spending all of your free time watching Netflix in your underwear you can utilise this time towards making your business thrive. Intrinsic motivation to get a job done is so much more powerful than stressing about working to deadlines for your boss. When you actually want to spend your down time learning, researching, and developing ideas for your business you’ll know that you’ve found your passion. Through discovering this you may also find that you don’t feel as frustrated / bored / resentful (choose your own adventure) at your current workplace. One thing that can get people down is they feel stuck, like they’re not achieving anything outside of their 40 - 60 hour a week job. When you have a business on the side that is a creative outlet for you, you might even develop a different perspective of your 9 to 5 job.

One question we get asked a lot is how did you get started and the simple answer is we just took the plunge and did it. Once you have committed mentally, emotionally, and financially to getting your side hustle off the ground, you’ve taken the first big step towards success!
The best part about starting something on the side is you really have nothing to lose! If all else fails you will still have your regular job and the satisfaction of knowing that you were brave enough to try something new. So if you’ve got that great idea, commit to getting started! You never know where it might take you.
